ABGOATR: A Backward Glance on a Travel Road

This is a project that saw the light in the minds of multi-instrumentalist Emmanuel Jessua and Thibault Lamy ( Hypno5e). The beauty of this release resides not only in the fact that it is an all around good album, but it is also a free download readily available to the masses. That's internet's magic and something you could only find from the underground scene.

Those familiar with Hypno5e's work would probably feel right at home while listening this disc. The rest of us will simply have to lay back and enjoy a cool series of compositions. You have a total of seven tracks of ambient /acoustic and progressive tunes on this. French lyrics, as well as English ones are used by male lead vocals and female back vocals. There are lots of acoustic parts; riffs, leads/solos and some great arpeggios all over the place. A nice dreamy feel and a touch of eerie are present all along the way. This is the type of bands that are signed with labels such as Aural Music or Prophecy Productions for instances. I like that fact that Emmanuel plays a bit like Steve Hacket. I mean he plays, most of the time, on a six strings acoustic guitar but in fashion usually heard with classical guitar, and the finger picking style is reminiscent to vintage Genesis era. My only little complaint would be directed towards the bass lines, which are a bit too loud in the mix, although without destroying the aesthetic of this album.

A tasty freebee with only good compositions. My vote goes for track #6, "Hier Régnant Desert".
