Negura Bunget: Maiestrit

Maiestrit is the very last album that Transylvanian act Negura Bunget recorded with the original line up. To be more specific, Hupogrammos, Sol Faur and Negru have re-recorded the 2000 release called Maiastru Sfetnic.

That earlier work is more leaning towards traditional black metal that what I've previously heard from this act. Nonetheless, their take on black metal reflects Negura Bunget's personal interpretation and we can still their Rumanian roots. There not as many folksy/acoustic parts and the xylophone is pretty much only found in opening track, "Vremea Locului Sortit". More acoustic riffs are to follow later in a few compositions. Their black metal comes with crushing riffs, distorted leads, varied paces and deep subdued raspy vocals. Clean chants are making occasional appearances as well. This band has a great way to use keyboards to create, not a symphonic, but a rather haunted feel , and those are omnipresent. In the end, a sense of eerie is occurring in every composition, and this is pretty cool if you'd ask me. The last two tracks are called acoustic versions of songs already included. In fact, those are instrumental rendition where the acoustic guitar plays the arpeggios while an electric instrument handles the leads. Bass and drums are also used, and of course, those atmospheric spooky keyboard patterns.

Maiestrit is a good piece of collection for the fans . This is perhaps not as outstanding as their more recent releases, still a good slab of Transylvanian black metal.
