Brought to you from France's own Alcest, here is this new release. Ecailles de Lune is basically the name of the first two compositions, which last nearly half the album's length.
Being signed to the home of eerie/dreamy music, you know those Frenchmen are not into the depressive black metal variety. On the other hand, main man Neige's background being rooted in the black metal arts, some residual of that genre are still present in their music. In deed, you can still a bit of rasps here and there, fast paces, tremolo picking leads. Those elements just increase the intensity levels. This album actually leans more towards the dreamy/melancholic side with long sadly melodic instrumental breaks. The clean echoing arpeggios are met by distorted ones and crunchy riffs on a frequent basis, thus creating a well balanced emotional sound track. The French lyrics might be an issue for some people. Even if I speak French myself, I normally prefer hearing foreign languages in my music. I believe that English, German, Norwegian and Russian lyrics are more appropriate than French in many circumstances. On this album though, it is not that bad. I could decipher a couple acoustic passages on "Ecailles de Lune II" and "Sur L'Océan Couleur de Fer". They could have used this instrument more often to increase the eerie already present. Alcest possesses good songwriting skills and good musicianship.
Ecailles de Lune brings in a fair amount of melancholy and I found some of their songs quite good like: " Ecailles de Lune II" "Percé de Lumière" and "Solar Song".
