Released: April 1982 / Produced by: Toto
Toto's mega international pop success picks up where the debut left off, minus prog-rock leanings. Result is more focused, classic pop-rock R&B fusion resulting in six Grammy's. This set is actually still extremely effective today, unlike many Grammy hogs.
Sophisticated compositions and arrangements of David Paich expertly rendered by absolute knock out groove-machine rhythm section of Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate, never more in evidence (or better) than here. Marred only by occasional straddle into MOR ("It's A Feeling," "Good For You"), many merits dwarf few faults. Contains smash hits "Rosanna" (Billboard #2) and Toto's only #1 single, "Africa." Notable for emergence of Steve Lukather as vocalist ("Rosanna"), and songwriter (Billboard #10 "I Won't Hold You Back," "Afraid Of Love"). Packed with standouts including rock cuts "We Made It," "Lovers In The Night" and top 40 "Make Believe." IV also includes lush orchestral arrangements by James Newton-Howard and Marty Paich, resulting in a seminal 80's album. Essential.
