Foghat: Not Live At The BBC

As the title states this is Foghat recorded not at the BBC but on 27th June 2007 at EKO Productions in Commack, NY for Mark Klein's Blues Warehouse radio show and has just been issued through specialist label Angel Air. As the informative sleeve notes by Joe Geesin explain Foghat are a band that have never received acclaim in their native UK but found success with their driving blues rock formula across the Atlantic, incredibly shifting in excess of 2 million copies of 1977's Foghat Live. Four of that albums six cuts appear here as performed by the current line up that still boasts classic rhythm section of Craig McGregor and Roger Earl and now featuring the energetic Charlie Huhn (Ted Nugent) and Bryan Bassett, who have both been with the band for more than a decade since the death of Davy Peverett in 1999.

This is essentially a no-frills live recording that does exactly what it says on the tin as they roll back the years for perennial live favourites "Home in My Hand", "Fool for the City", "Drivin Wheel" and "Slow Ride" (as performed by Adam Lambert on American Idol and even popping up on Guitar Hero). It shows that Foghat are a band that simply enjoy playing and with a relentless tour schedule in 2010 they have no thoughts of retirement yet.

Foghat: Not Live At The BBC

My Score:

While many diehard fans may have decided to write off Foghat for good after the untimely and premature deaths of founding members "Lonesome" Dave Peverett and Rod Price in 2000 and 2005 respectively, the veteran blues rockers led by drummer and sole founding member Roger Earl decided to forge on in an effort to keep the music alive. For the past five years this lineup consisting of Earl, longtime bassist Craig McGregor, along with ex-Ted Nugent vocalist / guitarist Charlie Huhn and guitarist Bryan Bassett, who cut his teeth with Southern rockers Molly Hatchet in the late 90's, have been touring relentlessly and tearing up stages everywhere in the process.

NOT Live at the BBC originally released as Live At The Blues Warehouse back in 2007 and now reissued by Angel Air Records captures the band's smoldering, albeit somewhat abbreviated set recorded for Mark Klein's Blues Warehouse radio show. Ironically the band was at the time promoting their Live II album when the invitation came in from Klein to record a live session on his show. So what you get here is essentially a live show minus the audience and it's exactly what went down over the airways on that summer evening.

The vibe is loose throughout as the band tears through a nice mix of classic Foghat tracks such as the extended "Chateau Lafitte '59 Boogie", "Driving Wheel" and "Fool For The City". These sit nicely alongside newer songs like the scorching dual guitar, instrumental workout on "California Blues" and the hard driving "Mumbo Jumbo" from 2003's Family Joules disc. Huhn's voice is perfectly tailored for Foghat's blues based repertoire, and while he isn't "Lonesome" Dave he does a great job putting his own stamp on some of these classic cuts from the band's back catalogue. Likewise newer member Bassett should also be commended for his searing slide work over the course of this recording. Again much like Huhn he is standing in the rather tall shadow of Rod Price but he certainly rises to the occasion, and I think both Rod and Dave would be proud of just how well these guys do the material justice. Of course no Foghat show would be complete without the requisite "Slow Ride" and "I Just Want To Make Love To You", but the final four tracks also includes blazing renditions of a couple of blues staples as Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues" and Elmore James' "Shake Your Money Maker" both get Foghat-ized. If anything these two songs further demonstrate just how far Bassett has come into his own as a player.

If you've always been a fan and gotten off on the hard drivin' blues rock that Foghat has become known for then I think you'll find that this version of the band is doing a splendid job of keeping the groups legacy firmly intact.

My Score:

This was released in the US as "Live At The Blues Warehouse". I was originally skeptical of how essential this would be but found it to be excellent! Great performance and sound quality is very good. Highly recommended. The band is releasing a a new blues album next month titled "Last Train Home".
