I was surprised to see that Section A had released more CDs since The Seventh Sign, a CD that I found most agreeable with a fine line-up; they must have slipped under my radar. And even thought when doing some research I found that their second album Parallel Lies had been given mixed write ups, I was still keen to check out their latest work.
This newest release from the progressive band is called Sacrifice, and the line-up here for Section A are vocalist Andy Engberg, guitarist and founder Torben Enevoldsen, new drummer Thomas Heintzelmann and some input from keyboardist Lasse Finbraten of the band Circus Maximus.
On Sacrifice Section A are playing heavy, more clear-cut metal, with less progressive moments than before, though maybe that wasn't the best of moves and may be worth a re-think before the next release. Sacrifice is a sturdy metal album, but despite its good points and with some exceptions like "Intoxicated" and "Heroes" I did find that the album is not the most electrifying of metal CDs. Beginning with "Sacrifice" a medium paced heavy track with driving double kicks, the guitar riff sounds very similar to that on later track "Danger". Section A do get more adventurous with "Room With A View" and the guitar/keyboard tradeoffs on the animated "Land Of The Desert Sun", and Sacrifice closes strongly with the uplifting track "The City Is Falling".
Though not all of Section A's latest material had quite the positive effect like The Seventh Sign did, Sacrifice still deserves a score of 3.5 so I wouldn't dismiss it as an option, especially anyone who liked the band's prior releases, just don't expect as many progressive touches in their music this time around.
