I Love Rich: Season of the Rich

I Love Rich are unashamedly good time party rock that certainly don't take themselves too seriously. A quick glance at song titles like "Let's Fuck All Night", or "Everybody Gets Laid Tonight" will also tell you that they aren't liable to be joining the PC brigade soon either. So with their cards on the table right from the outset, the challenge is to make sure that the lyrics are funny enough and the music rocks hard enough to put a smile on your face. Now I have been known to let out the odd chuckle while streaming the odd Steel Panther tune on youtube, so I'd like to think that I have the ability to laugh at a cleverly constructed piss take when I hear one, however I Love Rich are neither funny enough, nor musically sassy enough to really hit the spot on either count.

The five tracks on the disc pay homage (and then some) to early Kiss, to the extent that in places you could believe you are listening to some demos from their debut album, however where Kiss' "Strutter", well....strutted, or "Cold Gin" had you stomping your foot and howling along in approval, I Love Rich just sound dull and lifeless and even compared to early Kiss, sloppy as hell. Rich himself tries for all his life to ape Paul Stanley's vocal style, however he struggles to keep things in tune half the time and when added to the likes of a drum solo (I kid you not) in the middle of track one (now there's one thing guaranteed not to get you laid) and some extremely simple rhythms, none of the five tracks capture the imagination at all.

To be fair, the band's web site is way funnier than the blatant lyrics that pass for humour here and I would bet that I Love Rich would make for a tremendous night out if you get the chance to catch them in the Chicago area, however as a collection of songs that will make you want to play this disc at home, Season of the Rich falls way short.
