Here's a tasty little nugget from Dutch band The Devil's Blood, their latest slice of 70's styled hard rock/psych/folk/art rock called The Time of No Time Evermore. Think of a marriage between early Black Sabbath, Black Widow, Comus, Yes, and Jefferson Airplane, and you have an idea where these guys are coming from. They don't hit you as hard over the head with the doomy vibe as Witchcraft, but their homage to vintage 70's styles is quite enjoyable.
"I'll Be Your Ghost" has an almost funky vibe to go along with plenty of meaty guitar licks and layers of vocals, while "The Yonder Beckons" sounds like Jon Anderson & Grace Slick got together to jam with Sabbath and Blue Cheer. Opening two-part title track is clearly influenced by obscure prog/folk legends Comus, while "House of 10.000 Voices" is a mix of hard rock, psychedelia, and prog, unlike anything you have heard in recent years. Plenty of tasty riffs and stinging guitar solos on "Christ of Cocaine", and the band channel an almost Southern Rock meets early 80's metal vibe on "Queen of My Burning Heart", one of the CDs more fascinating numbers. The real show-stopper here though is the 11-minute closer "The Anti-Kosmik Magick", a real feast for lovers of 70's prog and hard rock. This one has an epic feel, and offers a boatload of twin guitar harmonies that will remind the listener of vintage Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, and Judas Priest.
The Time Of No Time Evermore is sure to be a pleasant surprise to many, and it's one of those releases that reveals more and more with each listen. If 70's styled hard rock and a healthy dose of psych, prog, and folk sounds appealing to you, definitely seek this one out. Expert playing and wonderful vocals match up with catchy, memorable tunes for a well put together album that is sure to create a healthy buzz.
