Long Island, NY based Drowned Sorrow, have a new 6 track EP, called Fittings At The Coffin Shop. Steeped in old school Hardcore/Metalcore, Drowned Sorrow play with a ton of attitude, but can their songs match up?
After a few spins of this EP, unfortunately I was none too impressed. The vocals are of the run of the mill, Cookie Monster variety, with far too many indistinguishable vocals through the entire CD, which doesn't translate well to any type of memorable songs. The vocal performances almost assault the listener into submission, which for a Metal/Hardcore band would normally be a good thing, but simply do nothing more here than to irritate. Musically, this 5 piece band invokes powerfully aggressive rhythms with reckless abandon but not much else and there really is no melodic sense to speak of, even though the band does seem to think so, using "evocative melodic textures" in their bio.
The 6 tracks on this EP suffer mightily from the grinding of the gears that are the actual music and the lyrics/vocals. But besides the actually really cool title of this EP, Fittings At The Coffin Shop, I take away very little from this release, but kids who follow this underground Metalcore stuff will probably love this. The music makes no sense to me and there are no great individual performances to speak of, which also translates to a mish-mosh of music that is just not fun to listen to. This is completely NOT my cup of tea, for sure.
