Lux Ferre is an unknown band from Portugal, at least for me, that was founded back in 2001. They had a few demos out before their 2004 debut, Antichristian Propaganda. After five years, Lux Ferre is stepping back from darkness with their second effort called Atrae Materiae Monumentum.
You instantly know those fellows are into black metal, and they also have the proper physical appearance that goes with the genre. Those guys are no clowns though and they mean business. Perhaps their style is not the most popular, still Lux Ferre possesses tight musicianship and what they have composed and recorded is well done. The sound production is a bit raw, without affecting the quality. This is standard black metal vibe here. Mostly done at fast paces, this music contains distorted riffs, tremolo pickings, double basses, blast beats and deep rasps; the works. I found the moderate tempos serving their music better personally. Then a crushing mood settled, helped with the juicy distorted arpeggios, all of this done with great darkness. It was notably the case with the opening and closing track named "O Caminho" and "Dormente". Another cool element found in Lux Ferre's music is a sense of melancholy that one can witness in songs like:"Correntes" and "Thirst for Despair".
Atrae Materiae Monumentum is ultimately a solid release of black metal from Portugal.
