Fans of Arch Enemy might want to check into this latest from Italian act Mechanical God Creation. Cell XIII features the frenzied death metal growls of Lucy, a dark haired beauty who can shred the paint off your house with her brutal delivery. She's surrounded by a very capable band who clearly know how to deliver solid extreme metal. Though the band doesn't rely much on guitar solos or technical passages, there's plenty of pummeling death metal to be found here, complete with crushing, weaving riffs and pulverizing drum blasts. "2012" has a wild, sort of galloping feel to it, while tunes like "Process of Mental Killings" and "Divinity" have plenty of 'old school' feel to them. Unfortunately, too many of the songs here follow the same blistering pace, and it's not until the closer "Death Business" that we see the band slowing down a bit and throw in some varied tempos.
Cell XIII has its moments, but it's far from being a perfect death metal album. Lucy has a fearsome growl, though she's no Angela Gossow yet, and you can tell the band are on the cusp of starting to create something very memorable. Many of the elements are already there, so let's see if they can put it all together in the near future.
