Nothing can give you more of a negative outlook on life than living in Cleveland and to prove this fact the band Masakari has unleashed the metalcore/crust disc The Profit Feeds to bash everything from politics and religion to the armed forces. Musically they give you a nasty helping of down tuned riffage sure to satisfy your craving for mosh pit activity but along with that they try to show all that is wrong with the world today by taking swipes at what they see as profound issues. I cannot say that the message is one I am all that crazy about but they do deliver it in a worthwhile metal package.
Luckily the growling vocals are mostly unintelligible so if you hide the lyrics than this becomes a much more enjoyable album. Born from the sludge and doom metal of their predecessors, these guys have added a touch of melodic to a sound that usually just plods on and on. Don't get me wrong, this band is as heavy as hell but they do so with some style that is usually lacking in the genre.
Trying to stay away from the politics of their album, I will have to say that these guys can musically bring it with a vengeance and I will gladly seek out their next offering. I just wish that they would try to deal with a bit more original subject matter and quit trying to preach to the choir.
I also don't get the Roman numerals for the tracks. It must have some meaning but for the life of me I have not been able to figure out what they are trying to say. It is just a little mystery that I would be interested in finding out what it is all about.
Bottom line is that these guys have a unique sound which is very good and one that I am liking more with each time I play the disc. The positives do outweigh the negatives but I will be looking for more on the plus side with the next release.
