Lantlos: .Neon

For some strange reasons, and although I've already reviewed their work, I was under the impression this was a German band. They are not, since Neige is, in fact, a musician from two French black metal acts: Amesoeurs & Alcest.

Lantlos have been labeled as post black metallers. You can feel their roots are from that great underground movement with these elements: raspy vocals, tremolo picking leads and blast beats. This is not the one-dimensional furious type of metal though. These guys can as well be efficient in conveying their feelings through moderate and calmer tempos. The guitar playing is excellent and could be as extreme with distortion as it could be harmonious with melodic arpeggios and clean leads. Like it is frequently seen amongst the good French metal acts, dark emotional patterns are felt throughout this disc. Thus .neon emanates through its sonic structure a melancholic/depressive edge. The raspy vocals are decipherable, giving another chance to perceive their somber poetry.

In short, .neon is another very good impression left in the French underground scene. Only six compositions, still lasting around 40 minutes, this new effort s filled with very good moments. My favorite tracks are : "Minusmensch", "Pulse/Surreal", "Coma" and the intense & crushing instrumental title track.

Track listing:
1- Minusmensch
2- These Nights Were Ours
3- Pulse/Surreal
4- Neige de Mars
5- Coma
6- Neon

My Score:

It is a german band, in that the guy who wrote and played everything is German. Neige only provides vocals. With that out of the way, good album, not quite up to expectations but not bad by any means.
