Crosscore is a pretty good name for this new release from The Way of Purity, an album rooted in hardcore but with plenty of death metal, black metal, industrial, metalcore, and melodic rock woven in for good measure. Can't say we know much about these guys, as they wear masks and don't give out much information about themselves, but their singer is female, and named Betty. In this day and age of 'which female growler can "out extreme" the next', Betty is just another in a long line of vocalists who want to be the next Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy. Well, she has a pretty lethal snarl, and even throw in some clean passages along the way, but The Way of Purity is all over the map, and their reluctance to stay in one style for too long might wind up hurting them in the end. At under 30 minutes, Crosscore comes across as more of an EP than a full length, despite having 10 tracks. Much of what you hear on the CD sounds too much like every other deathcore band that have been rammed down our throats the last few years, though let's face it, tunes such as "Burst" and "Lycanthropy" feature plenty of raging tremel picked riffs, sledgehammer drum blasts, bubbling synths, and the gore splattered wailings of Betty, all which make for some commendable moments. However, those moments are few and far between, as the band still haven't figured out how to write memorable songs. Just patchworking together multiple metal styles within each song is not going to do it alone. Production wise, Crosscore is a 'huge' sounding CD, but that's just not enough to elevate this CD past the middle of the pack.
