In the best tradition of "hold my beer, watch this", Jesse James Dupree and company has used the past eight years to pen eleven songs that prove that they would have been just as well off to keep playing the biker circuit and continue to pump out their standards which are well known in every strip joint across the nation. Instead they decided to make all those fans learn some new lyrics to sing along to while chugging a Budweiser and watching the Dukes of Hazzard marathon. Well, at least they put the lyrics inside so it won't be too much of a problem for those among the Jackyl family that can read.
Give them credit though, this is for the most part a high energy blast of old fashion rock and roll but in reality nothing more than a rehashing of their past which after a good beginning has slide downward with every release. Even their double entendre lyrics that is a Jackyl staple are weak showing that Jesse's songwriting could use a little Viagra in its system.
They could be the best bar band in existence and most of the songs on here will prove that fact out. For the most part you are going to get anthem rockers where each in itself is OK but the similarity between all of them on the disc makes this one little more than fuel for your next keg party.
When they move away from that formula on the disc the results are almost embarrassing. The title track "When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide" is a southern power ballad that will have their typical fan taking off their Union Jack headband to wipe away a tear as he raises his lit Bic to the sky. "Just Like A Negro" is well, I really don't have to say much more than give you the title and Jesse's anti racist lyics:
"Sometimes I find myself acting
Just like a negro.
You know the brothers are the ones
That started rock and roll".
Enough said.
Capping it off Jesse does an a cappella version of the Janis Joplin classic "Mercedes Benz". He introduces it as a song of great political and social importance. Janis is doing a few spins in her final resting place I am sure every time this drivel is played.
If you have followed Jackyl's career, this disc will come as no surprise at all. Filled with beer drinking and hell raisin' anthems that languish in the territory they have resided in since the inception of the band. You would think that after so many years since their last release they would have come up with something just a little more original than this.
