Quick And Easy Boys, The: Red Light Rabbit
The Quick And Easy Boys second album, the rather oddly titled Red Light Rabbit is a bit of a jumble that never really decides exactly what it wants to be. The band from Eugene Oregon attempt to roll funk, psychedelic rock, garage-soul and honky tonk into one cohesive sound, however the end results are rather timid and all too often completely inconsequential.
The upbeat vibe of opening track "Foster I..." kicks in with a tight little riff, before dissolving into funky-ska-lite that reminds a bit of Blur and in truth starts to grate on the nerves after repeated listens. From there it is a sloppy mix of styles that hints at some cute ideas, but are let down in the execution. "Take Your Medicine" struts around like a disco tune, however the annoyingly bright vocals give the impression of the Bee Gees jamming with Mika and while the guitar work sparks away in the back ground with a surprising country feel, the vocals only make you want it all to end. The trading of styles continues with "Black Panther" adding a welcome dirtier edge to proceedings, before "Breakin' Love" tries to get all countrified again, but as before is hampered by a thoroughly tiresome vocal. And so it goes on with the likes of the tribal drum thump of the title track offering a glimmer of hope which the confused tedium of "Spicy Paella" takes great delight in dashing.
The Quick And Easy Boys have often been likened to early Red Hot Chilli Peppers, however it took that band quite some time to become as tedious as much of what is on display here is. There's no doubt that the songs on Red Light Rabbit are ambitious in style, however it is hard to be impressed when the results are so flimsy and in truth irritating.
