For the first time in over 20 years, the two key members of Bachman Turner Overdrive, Randy Bachman and Fred Turner, are back together again (minus quite a few pounds), creating some heavy duty, full throttle hard rock. Bachman & Turner is the reunion of these two heavy hitters, and quite frankly most of this CD sounds like it could have been recorded in 1974. Those who were into the crushing sounds of classic BTO should be very pleased by what they hear on this one.
There's no shortage of heavy riffs, anthemic choruses, and blistering lead work on Bachman & Turner, as many of these tunes fit comfortably alongside staples such as "Let It Ride", "(You Ain't) Seen Nothing Yet", "Takin' Care of Business", and "Hey You". Rockers like"Rollin' Along", "That's What It Is", "Moonlight Rider", and "Slave to the Rhythm" all feature that trademark BTO stomp, complete with fiery vocals and catchy, hard rocking guitar work. The booming bass, heavy riffs, and gritty vocals of "I've Seen the Light" will remind many hard core fans of the Not Fragile era, and the anthem "Rock n Roll Is The Only Way Out" could easily be the sountrack to your next beer swillin' summer BBQ. Other fuzz-toned rockers like "Neutral Zone" and "Repo Man" mix classic BTO sounds with vintage ZZ Top, and there's a jazzy edge to the lengthy "Traffic Jam" that really lets Bachman show his instrumental chops.
In a time when good, 70's styled hard rock is hard to come by, it's great to see two veterans of the classic era putting aside their past differences and coming up with some original material that basically picks up right where they left off in their heyday.
BTO fans, be on the lookout for this in a CD store near you!
