Edensong: Echoes of Edensong-From the Studio and Stage

Echoes of Edensong-From the Studio and Stage is the latest release from New York proggers Edensong, a part studio, part live release that's technically an EP except for the fact that it clocks in at nearly 57 minutes (ok, so much for my EP theory!). The bands previous release The Fruit Fallen struck a chord with many prog fans, so it's good to see they came back while the iron is still hot with this new one.

First two tracks, "Beneath the Tide" and "Lorelai" are brand new songs, and quite good. "Beneath the Tide" features some rocking sections, but also plenty of Jethro Tull inspired interplay between the keys, guitar, and flute. Leader James Byron Schoen has a great voice, and is able to adapt well to the heavier sections as well as the more pastoral moments. "Lorelai" is a lovely piece, reminding of classic Genesis, Camel, and Jethro Tull, and track three, "The See But Not Believe" is an older number from 2006 that sees the band in a more progressive metal style, yet the prevalent flute is still a major force and gives that classic sound. A live version of "Reunion" from The Fruit Fallen comes next, and this one is a dark & ominous piece that has hints of Tull as well as King Crimson, as the band takes the song through plenty of peaks and valleys, from soft to bombastic. A great, muscular live version of "Beneath the Tide" , recorded from the 3RP festival in Pennsylvania in 2009, and a recent live recording in Quebec of "The Sixth Day" (quite a charming number I might add, very pastoral in nature) round out this very entertaining CD.

Ultimately, Echoes of Edensong-From the Studio and Stage is a lovely little warm-up to the next full length studio release from Edensong, who, based on what we've heard from them so far, seem to have a very bright future ahead of themselves.
