Children Of Bodom: Hate Crew Deathroll
Things can't be easy for Children Of Bodom. Essentially the seminal Finnish melodic thrash metal band they've come to see imitators come and go and nearly sully the reputation of the music they worked hard to build with albums such as Hatebreeder (1999) and Something Wild (1997) but hardcore Bodomites need not fear (as if you would): The band haven't let any extraneous affairs get them down and with Hate Crew Deathroll they're back and mighty as ever.
Like the classic thrash bands that COB are influenced by the quintet know that so much of a song's power comes with the first beats and thus tracks such as the opening "Needled 24/7" (likely to be a live favorite), "Sixpounder," "Bodom Beach Terror" and "You're Better Off Dead" all begin with uniquely different but nevertheless equally powerful openings that lay waste to the listener's tender ear canals.
But that first beat is only half the battle. No matter how mighty the first punch of a fight is, he who comes out swinging has to stay swinging for the rest of the match, striking, ducking and weaving no matter how badly he wants to give in, no matter how much he aches for resolution and no matter how many blows he takes himself. Children Of Bodom know this, of course, and their arms remain up throughout each of those tracks, making sure that each leather-coated fist connects with eye or jaw, flesh and bone in a sweaty, bloody mess that ceases only when one party (the listener) is knocked out cold or begs for mercy.

Children Of Bodom: Hate Crew Deathroll Posted by Pete Pardo, SoT Staff Writer on 2005-01-15 09:46:09 My Score:
The Finnish juggernauts known as Children of Bodom have created here on their fourth studio release an album so heavy (yes, the crunch factor has been kicked up a notch), yet extremely melodic, and still containing much of their intricate and progressive tendencies. Upon hitting the play button, you get blindsided by the power and precision of "Needled 24/7", a speedy and heavy romp that is a current live favorite, that is just littered with heavy guitar riffs and screeching vocals. Other hot tracks include the brutal, monster riff stomp of "Sixpounder", the raging "You're Better Off Dead", the power metal mania of "Bodom Beach Terror", and the killer, CD-ending title cut.
COB's more straightforward sound here on Hate Crew Deathroll somewhat sacrifices the bands more intricate style of arrangements previously heard on past albums, but this leaner & meaner approach still allows for many jaw-dropping solo exchanges from guitarist Alexhi Laiho and synth master Janne Warmen. Laiho's vocals still slice and burn, but there is an even more melodic approach taken here which gives this album a slightly larger appeal to listeners who may fall outside the melodic death/black metal camp. Highly recommended!
