Tears: Memories of Things Unnecessary

This Los Angeles-based trio originally from Greece bills itself as a "metal/hard rock/emotional/goth/progressive/experimental" band. (What other genres are left?) Led by vocalist, guitarist, keyboard player and songwriter Gouaime Divanis, who obtained master's degrees in advanced music composition and acoustics by the age of 23, Tears is all over the place. The seven songs on the band's 33-minute debut EP, Memories of Things Unnecessary, sound scattershot, as if Tears is trying to appeal to as broad an audience as possible. But instead, the band actually may be throwing off (and turning off) a lot of listeners.

Opening track "Time Master" is a combination of power and thrash metal, while "Things Imaginary" and "Memories" fulfill the band's "emotional," "goth" and "progressive" requirements. Later, the album enters its "experimental" phase, with ambient passages in the three-part "Trendy De-Commercialization" — an apropos title, since the music here is a far cry from the mainstream leanings of previous tracks. (Divanis writes in the liner notes that it was originally composed for a contemporary dance act.)

Tears is reportedly working on a full-length album. Here's hoping that Divanis and Co. have narrowed their musical focus by then...
