The Pathway is the debut of a Finnish progressive metal group who go by the name of Anthriel. The band started out in 2004, formed by keyboardist Antti Hakulinen, guitarist Timo Niemistö and drummer Jari Kuokkanen, then came bass player Klaus Wirzenius and finally they found their vocalist Simo Silvan. After hearing The Pathway you could say Anthriel are a very competent band that sound like they have been performing together for so much longer. Anthriel are also clearly influenced by Symphony X, as opener "Devil's Lullaby" is one of the tracks which has a strong SX vibe to its musical structure and sound.
The Pathway is a collection of well produced songs that tell the tale of one man's trek "to find his own personal promised land and balance". The CD has twelve tracks, though some are quite short well played instrumentals, with "Chains of the Past" being the exception at over thirteen minutes. No doubt Anthriel's The Pathway will be well received by numerous metal fans.
Overall, this may not be a totally unique release, but even so The Pathway will serve well to fill the gap while you try and wait patiently for that next Symphony X release.
