Beneath the Massacre doesn't seem to want any of the other technical death-core acts on the scene get a jump on them, so even though they didn't have enough tunes for a full length ready to go, the band wanted to get this EP Maree Noire into the hands of their rabid fans. Fret not tech-death lovers, as BtM are as lethal as ever here despite the short selection of songs. Opening up with "The Casket You Slept In", the band bludgeons you with violent growls, uber-technical & punishing guitar riffs, and insane drums blasts. This continues on the shuffling & twisting "Black Tide" (a song that ends way too quickly), and there's no shortage of sick guitar & drum licks on the brief instrumental "Drill Baby Drill". The stop/start rhythms and dazzling riffs of "Designed to Strangle" shreds beyond belief (I think the band is trying to let Brain Drill know they have competition!), and the wild & quite progressive "Anomic" is literally jaw dropping with the amount of intricate arrangements the band is throwing at the listener.
Despite it's very brief run time, Maree Noire impresses on all levels, and is proof positive that Beneath the Massacre are living up to all the promise that they showed with their debut a few years ago. Now, let's hope they get another full length into our hands before too long.
