Mares of Thrace: The Moulting

Canadian based female duo, Stefani Mackichan and Therese Lanz make up the Noise/Doom band called Mares of Thrace and the their 10 track CD, The Moulting, is just that, a noisy mess. Filled with sludgy songs that they say are influenced by bands like Isis,The Moulting is simply put, boring. Gravely growled female vocals over top of Stoner Rock, dissonant guitar riffs with drums bashing all over the place does not equal success. Drums sound like they are falling down a couple of flights of stairs and combined with the poor guitar riffing and electronic nonsense thrown in for good measure, this is a tedious listen at best. Songs like "Mandible" and "Rawcake (and bloody fingers)" solidify the messy, garage band sound.

Obviously these ladies are opting to be "artsy" but they fail miserably. It took a lot of effort to make it through this CD and I'm glad it's over. This record is not good. It does have somewhat interesting artwork though.
