Weapon Head: Surgical Smile

Every now and then a CD comes across my desk that I have put on the back burner for one reason or another and then when I get 'round to listening to it, I want to kick myself for waiting so long! Enter Aussie band, Weapon Head. Their first full length record is called Surgical Smile and it just flat out smokes!! Upbeat, punchy, in yer face, good ol' guitar driven Hard Rock n Roll, is what you will get from Surgical Smile.

With elements of pure Indie Rock, Hard Rock, Metal and even a smidge of Pop, Weapon Head are a band that needs to be heard. The driving beats of CD openers, "Bullshit Has No Sound" and "Gimme, Gimme" are two excellent representations of what this band is all about. Carrying serious Pop sensibilities throughout each song, choruses will get stuck in your head, while your head and feet will be bopping and tapping involuntarily to the grossly catchy riffs.

Surgical Smile is like a complete breath of fresh air. Imagine a heavier Cheap Trick mixed with a band like Instruction or fellow Aussies, Airbourne (or another fave of mine, Oklahoma's own Traindodge!) and you're getting the idea. Straight ahead Alt Rock with an edge and did I say that these guys Rawk?! Check out the killer track, "Swangsta Gangsta", with its Thin Lizzy "Are You Ready?" opening riff that turns into a cool Power Pop type of rocker or the almost eerie," Rescue Me, or Bring Me Home". It doesn't matter, this record is "All Killer and no Filler", with nary a dud track to be found. And with stellar vocals from drummer Boris, who sounds SO much like a young Robin Zander (singer of Cheap Trick for all you kiddies out there), it's uncanny! In addition, for all of you John Lennon fans out there, Weapon Head even pull of a great version of Lennon's "Cold Turkey" as their CD closer.

Weapon Head are Boris Billing-lead vocals and drums, Steve Bishop-guitar, Dave Bishop-guitar and Drew Allen-bass and they have one of the best records that I have had the pleasure of listening to in 2010. Straight up Rock with an Alt slant with slight Metal elements all pieced together with great songs and a sense of melody, there is nothing NOT to love about these guys. Here's to hoping that rest of the world wakes up and soon! Weapon Head just plain and simply Rock! One of the best releases of 2010!
