Circle II Circle: Consequence Of Power

Anytime that Zak Stevens opens his mouth there is usually something good that comes out. With the fifth release from him and his group Circle II Circle this notion is once again obvious to the listener. I once told Zak that I bet it would be enjoyable listening to him sing the phone book and after hearing Consequence Of Power this is a statement that I will stand firmly behind.

There is little doubt that this is a Circle II Circle album. All that we have come to expect is there. The epic power metal, searing guitar work and even the amazing power ballad are all on the disc. It may be a little more of a trimmed down album as keyboards only make a couple appearances but there is a feeling that this is much more of a team effort. Guitarist Andy Lee provides many a tantalizing solo to accent Mr. Stevens and the rhythm section of Paul Michael Stewart on bass/keyboards and Johnny Osborn on drums both have their moments to shine on this album. Of course it is the vocal performance of one of the premier singers alive today that is the focal point but there is much more body to the music than on their previous albums. You may come for a dose of Zak but you will leave with the impression that this is a damn good band behind those golden pipes.

Right from the get go as Andy Lee's churning guitar opens "Whispers In Vain" you will feel the sense of drama that is such a part of Circle II Circle. This stirring six string prolog takes you to a full heavy metal onslaught that captures the feeling of old school such as Iron Maiden or maybe Judas Priest. This is classic power metal that sets the tone for what is to follow, an album of terrific metal that will constantly find its way into your player.

There is still some proggy elements to the disc as with the enticing "Mirage" or the superb "Blood Of An Angel" but this disc leans more toward the straight forward, in your face power metal for the most part. "Blood Of An Angel" is saved for the last song on the disc and is a smashing closer as it brings back all the things that have made you enjoy Zak and his career. It is a power ballad that builds to a thunderous climax and makes you think that the end of this disc comes way too soon.

Since getting this disc I have had it playing with so much frequency that even my wife can now sing most of the songs along with Zak. She also does so with great pleasure as this is one of those albums that becomes of a part of you. Remember when you use to open up an album and study the lyrics just so you could sing along? Well here you go! This is one of those times. It is a disc that has all the elements you love rock and roll for. Terrific guitar work, (Check out the dynamite "Anathema" for one great solo), powerful anthem like choruses and vocals that are some of the best you will ever hear. I once read a statement that said; If you want to know how to sing metal, all you have to do is listen to Zak Stevens. I find it very difficult to come up with any argument against that. He is an amazing talent and this disc showcases that voice in a way that will make you only want to hear it again and again.

Circle II Circle: Consequence Of Power

My Score:

Zak Stevens & Company are back with their latest Circle II Circle release, titled Consequence of Power. On this one, the band is moving further away from the more progressive & epic sounds of some of their earlier release towards a more melodic, and certainly continued heavy direction. Many of the tracks here on Consequence of Power are more straightforward than what we are used to hearing from the band, but no less powerful. "Remember" is a perfect example, a super heavy, crushing number with a killer guitar riff, yet instantly catchy vocal melodies from Zak.

Other highlights on the CD include the pulsating "Mirage", the frenzied title track, the blistering all out metal assault of "Episodes of Mania", the Judas Priest inspired romp of "Redemption", and the dark & dirty "Anathema". Andy Lee's guitars are massive throughout, and though keyboards play a very small role on the album, when used they are quite effective.

It's always refreshing to hear a power metal act rely on melody, textures, and crunch rather than speed, which is something that Circle I Circle have gotten very good at over the years. Seeing as Savatage is basically non-existent at this time, it's great that Circle II Circle and John Oliva's Pain are still carrying on the torch, and doing it quite exceptionally.

My Score:

Yet another great release from these guys. This time more straight forward melodic power metal, but the consistency is so good song to song. Zak sounds fantastic as usual. If you love melodic metal with heavy power riffs and great sing along vocals then you need to make sure and not miss this release.
