In the promo material that was sent with this debut album from Florida's Atom Smash lead singer Sergio says that bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden "paved the way for him musically". Well, I think that they would need a few more layers of blacktop before they dare compare themselves to bands of that stature. They would also have to produce something more than this by the numbers bit of glossy formula rock. They also say that the band has the charisma of the Stone Temple Pilots or Alice In Chains with an industrial bent a la Nine Inch Nails. I don't know what album they were talking about but Love Is In The Missile has none of these qualities. If I was to compare them to anyone it would be along the lines of Nickleback or the plethora of similar bands.
Kicking off with a decent rocker called "Ashes", the band kind of fools you with this offering as the slippery slope that follows takes you down into the quagmire of what is wrong with today's radio music. It is little wonder that groups have such a tough time today when their sound is like going to McDonalds. No matter where you are in the world a Big Mac still taste the same.
From that beginning the band takes you to "Do Her Wrong" which Def Leppard should file for copy write infringement as Pour Some Sugar On Me must surely be the basis for the intro of this tune that is such a forced bit of trite it makes me think that the band really is taking a mish mash of what has been popular and trying the cut and paste approach to creating music.
Of course the obligatory power ballads are present. "Erase The Days" bores you with a melody that has been used hundreds of times before. "Bianca" is the angst filled ode to make the females in the audience swoon and "Shooting Star" fizzles as the album closing statement.
If you want to play a game of where have you heard that riff or melody before, this is the perfect album for it. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Atom Smash is singing the praises of a whole host of bands. While none of this disc is terrible, there is just absolutely nothing on here that I could call original sounding. That doesn't mean that they won't be the next big thing as it is a perfect fit for those that like their music to be of the fast food variety.
