Stay away from any liquid or chemical enhancers while you step into the land of stoner/drone metal that is inhabited by Adrift For Days. This sludge filled 70+ minute disc will help to bring out all those feelings of paranoia associated with the use of any mind altering substance. Oozing and creeping along this one feels like a vinyl disc playing with someone putting a finger on it as it spins creating a slow motion version of some very distorted guitar work.
"Bury All that's Chosen" is the 15+ minute album opener. Barely audible for the first few minutes, the dam is broken after about 4 minutes when the dirge begins. This is stoner sludge to the max until they veer down the psychedelic highway that brings back the feel of those late 60's bands that composed most of their stuff under the influence of some serious hallucinogenic substance. Be prepared as this is what they offer you for the most part on this disc. There are a couple exceptions though.
With the song "Messages Through Sleep" I had the idea that Syd Barrett might have been resurrected for one last shot at his brand of Floydism. Trippy and as off the wall as anything that came from Syd, Adrift For Days are going to regret much after the drugs finally wear off.
The other step away from what is this bands norm is the surprisingly effective bit of old blues put through the stoner grinder that they call "The Leech". This unique combo is by far the highlight of the disc. In fact I have been really digging this approach and hope that they give us a mega dose of it. I would most certainly own that album.
They revert back to the more conventional formula for the remainder of the album with predictable results. While not unlistenable, it just has nothing to offer that would make me want to put it in the player again. This one is a bleak record that is meant to be that way and certainly hits the mark that it is aiming for. It is a claustrophobic album that really makes you want to head outside for a breath of fresh air. I hope that a group of Chilean miners don't get their hands on this one, it is sure to evoke some very bad memories.
