Fatiniza: Confusion

Born in the mountains of Columbia, Fatiniza currently lives in Dubai and Confusion is her debut album. It might seem a little strange at first seeing this review on a prog site because this music has nothing to do with progressive rock. Confusion is a pretty standard album of pop/rock music. Of course, just because it is not progressive does not mean it is a poor album. On the contrary, as far as pop/rock music goes this is pretty good stuff, albeit very commercial which I am sure is what the artist intended.

What makes this album a little different from regular radio fare are the Latin rhythms Fatiniza incorporates into her music. Lots of acoustic and electric guitar is used throughout with the Latin sounds coming mostly via acoustic guitar and percussion. Some songs have a little more crunch in the rhythms elevating them from pop to rock and there are some nice melodies found throughout. The vocals are a little bluesy and soulful and generally well done as Fatiniza as a good voice although her Columbian accent does show up here and there but I do not consider it a distraction.

Some of the better tunes include "Fortune Teller", a song featuring some good guitar, nice backing vocals and just a little more interesting overall and "Out of Control" with its irresistible pop hooks and more nice guitar work. Fatiniza changes musical direction in the punk rock inspired "Femtosecond" but she loses momentum at the end of the album with the misplaced dance track "Fortune Teller (remix)", as the original is much better.

If you like radio friendly pop and rock with good vocals and plenty of catchy hooks, Fatiniza will probably suite your craving. Nothing earth shattering here but overall Confusion is a solid debut from someone who seems to be made for radio. Whether or that is a good thing is up for you to decide.
