In various guises The Crown have been around for virtually a couple of decades so surely they've mellowed and are settling for a nice quiet life with the metaphorical pipe and slippers. Erm, nope, not in the slightest if Doomsday King is our template.
Big, nay huge riffs are the order of the day with echoes of Slayer, Entombed and At the Gates all present within the grooves (assuming there's a vinyl version.) Doomsday King is unrelentingly brutal from beginning to end. No sell out power ballads for these boys. New vocalist Jonas Stålhammar acquits himself more than adequately, occasionally I'd have liked him slightly higher in the mix but he's supremely confident and this obviously bodes well for the band continuing the comeback beyond this record.
The opening scream on "Through Eyes of Oblivion", for instance, is as ferocious a statement of intent as possible and when backed up with super-powerful guitars and blood curdling drums this one is a possible song of the year for me. That said, there's much good stuff on offer here and let's hope that this time round The Crown get more recognition.
