YOB: Catharsis

I have no idea of the meaning behind the name YOB, the moniker chosen by this Oregon-based doom-metal band. But then again, I'm not sure why this chunk of eardrum pummeling is called Catharsis, either. Slithery vocals, guttural roars, agonistic screams, death-march riffs and meaty rhythms will knock you flat on your ass. Cathartic? Hardly. Just three tracks ("Aeons," "Ether" and the 23-minute title epic) clock in at more than 49 minutes. Maybe playing this music is therapeutic for the YOB trio, and it ain't bad stuff — if you want to hear death's soundtrack. Another alternative: Play Catharsis really loud during trick-or-treating hours. No one will dare knock on your door — except maybe the grim reaper.
