Atlantean Kodex: The Golden Bough

Hailing from Germany is the metal band called Atlantean Kodex; this group started out in 2006 and chooses to play a traditional style of heavy metal/epic doom. Featuring the vocals of Markus Becker, Michael Koch is their lead guitarist and Manuel Trummer looks after the rhythm guitar. Providing the pulse for Atlantean Kodex is Florian Kreuzer on bass and behind the drums is Mario Weiss.

Having previously only recording much shorter releases, The Golden Bough is the title of Atlantean Kodex's new and first full length metal CD. The band have based this album on "Sir James George Frazer's (1854-1941) homonymous scholarly epic, "THE GOLDEN BOUGH" that deals with his thought-provoking thesis that all forms of religion in Europe (including Christianity) originate from magical cults and fertility rites, which date back to the stone-age." So there you go this work certainly gave Atlantean Kodex plenty of ideas for the lengthy songs on their new album.

Atlantean Kodex have ticked all the boxes with this release not leaving anything out, as the "Fountain of Nepenthe" gets underway and the fetching metal music of Atlantean Kodex is heard. "Pilgrim" moves along at classic doom metal speed and with a similar feel, "Temple of Katholic Magick" is a further slow and mighty track. The band know how to utilize their powerful riffs and also create an atmospheric feel. The only thing holding my score back is the vocals; yes they are good though more variety wouldn't have hurt.

I'm not sure how to properly pronounce their name, but Atlantean Kodex have definitely made a positive impression with The Golden Bough. This band have been receiving substantial praise with particularly positive reviews and rightly so, as Atlantean Kodex has released a gripping metal recording.

Atlantean Kodex: The Golden Bough

My Score:

The Golden Bough is the latest from Germany's Atlantean Kodex, a crushing release filled with epic metal power and melodic doom. Think early Fates Warning, Candlemass, and even a touch of Black Sabbath, but the band never fall into 'slow dirge' for 'slow dirge's' sake by any means. Chances are if you like the style of American act While Heaven Wept, these capable Germans will be right up your alley.

Led by the powerful vocals of Becker, Atlantean Kodex churn out one powerful track after another on The Golden Bough. "Fountain of Nepenthe" and "Pilgrim" are two heavy hitters that kick off the CD, each clocking in at over 10 minutes in length, and are chock full of behemoth guitar riffs and soaring vocal melodies. On "Temple of Katholic Magick", the band rattle the foundation with some pounding arrangements, and crank up the speed factor on the raging "Disciples of the Iron Crown". The album centerpice is the 15 minute epic "A Prophet in the Forest", a melodic, textured number that features some tasty harmony guitar lines from Koch & Trummer, which remind me of Guardian and Spectre Within era Fates Warning. Becker's high pitched wailing is especially impressive here, as he's never overbearing and always melodic. The heavy riffs on this one will cause some serious headbanging for sure!

In short, The Golden Bough is one hell of an enjoyable slice of epic metal & doom that should even appeal to fans of power & prog metal. Cruz del Sur certainly has a winner on their hands with this one!
