With a name like Drunken Bastards, I was not expecting anything even slightly enjoyable from this band. The good news is that I was wrong! Not that anything outstanding is to be found, but it has its little moments.
This short (19:39) CD from those drunken Hungarians offers eight songs of their own extreme music cocktail. It is a bit hard to categorize their musical direction though. This album is extreme, crazy, melodic and even a bit catchy on the side. The clean/rough vocals are not pointing towards the death or black metal. Being hugely riffs oriented, it could fit a tad into the death side. Overall though, a thrashy metal tag would pretty much suit these guys and I should add with a punkish attitude. I don't mean the cute little thing now being known as punk but the hardcore/vintage a la Johnny Rotten/Sex Pistols type. Not that they can't play either, since Drunken Bastards possess a good command of their instrument, while being able to write some "decent" compositions. Still, nothing outstanding here. I liked their energy, juicy riffing and crazy solos, all being treated with a good sound production. My favorites pieces are: "Toxic Patrol" and "Prophecy of the Evening Starr (Barbatos).
Horns of the Wasted brings home some good punkish attitude directly from Hungary.
