Deja Vu

31 December 2012

Scott Jessup

The old Deja Vu and just like the Iron Maiden song of the same name goes "feel like I've been here before", well that's how I feel about a lot of music that I hear now. So what happened to that FRESH material?

While Bands have and will always incorporate some influences, but there are those times when I feel that music has become a lot like the movies with all those remakes and rehashing of previous ideas we are subjected to. Leaving us to wade through what's out there in an effort to find something worthwhile and refreshing instead of asking for that wasted time we spent watching them back. It's rare to discover those truly special new bands that are doing something really different and sadly it's getting harder to do so. I suppose like the movies it's just easier to take this route but how does that effect a band's longevity? I know I find much of what I hear coming out now less exciting, including many times those releases from my preferred groups, in contrast to how I felt when I think back to over the years.

When was the last time you heard a song and thought, now that's something totally refreshing? I doubt it's on a regular occurrence. Sure, it isn't easy always coming up with something new, and of your favourite acts, how many go back to an old idea or use someone else's? Every band has their influence and some take that inspiration further than others. Then, there are those who have been around for a while and change in an effort to appeal to a different market, but with mixed outcomes when trying to sound more like what is popular when they may be capable of so much more.

Over the last few years I have been going back and rediscovering those groups I didn't give enough attention to, and also searching out many fine bands that I had missed. I have found more enjoyment through doing this than listening to many of those newer releases I have purchased, which probably says a lot about where we may be heading.

I don't want the music I really enjoy to merely become background noise, like sadly some of my older favourites have now become. I just want to feel inspired and excited like I used to more so than I do now, so fingers crossed the new year will bring that which I seek.
