STEVEN REID
Best of 2024
1. Whom Gods Destroy : Insanium --- New supergroup delivers top-notch progressive metal
2. Judas Priest : Invincible Shield --- 2018’s Firepower was good but Invincible Shield is the real deal
3. Caligula’s Horse : Charcoal Grace --- More classy, technical but accessible progressive metal from these Australians
4. Willie Dowling : The Simpleton --- Some of the best piano based power pop you’re likely to hear
5. Opeth : The Last Will And Testament --- I didn’t realise how much I missed the growls until they growled once more. Their best for a long time to my ears
6. New Model Army : Unbroken --- Vintage UK Indie-Punk-Folk Rockers continue their renaissance
7. Harpazo : The Crucible --- Marc Centanni and Gary Wehrkamp (Shadow Gallery) bring together an all-star cast for progressive metal masterclass
8. Dvne : Voidkind --- Edinburgh outfit cross genre boundaries to deliver a heavy, intricate, slab of progressive, sludge post-metal
9. Frost* : Life In The Wires --- Excellent double CD from mega- consistent UK prog-rockers
10. House Of Lords : Full Tilt Overdrive --- Keyboard player Mark Mangold continues to reinvigorate pomp-rock mainstays
11. The End Machine : The Quantum Phase --- With singer Girish Pradhan, George Lynch and Jeff Pilson deliver one of their best post-Dokken albums
12. FM : Old Habits Died Hard --- The most consistent AOR band of all time continue that run with another classy release
13. Captain Of The Lost Waves : Beautiful Ugly --- A beautiful, haunting, captivating album that is a real mood changer. Stark and hard hitting at the same time
14. Hans Zimmer : Dune 2 OST --- Another wonderful soundscape from the master of film music
15. Haven of Echoes : Memento Vivere --- Andreas Hack and Paul Sadler somehow manage to better their impressive debut
16. Kid Kapichi : There Goes The Neighbourhood --- An attitude packed album that should propel this 90s UK infused band into the mainstream. I should hate this but I love it
17. Andy McKee, Calum Graham & Trevor Gardon Hall : Tripliciti --- Magnificent acoustic guitar album from some of the best players in the world
18. Nightmare : Encrypted --- Veteran French metal crew continue to work their way through singers but still deliver the goods
19. Neil Campbell : The Smoky God --- The ever eclectic (and often acoustic) Neil Campbell delivers one of his most progressive outings yet
20. Galneryus : The Stars Will Light The Way --- Japanese progressive power metal crew deliver once more.
21. Eclipse : Megalomanium II --- If you like big singalong choruses this album is for you. Cracking melodic rock.
22. Vanden Plas : The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things --- You know what you’re going to get from Vanden Plas and you know it’s going to be good. Progressive metal as it used to be
23. Magnum : Here Comes The Rain --- A fitting farewell from one of my favourite bands of all time
24. DGM : Endless --- DGM continue their journey towards melodic progressive metal. Who knew it would be this good?
25. Sweet : Full Circle --- It’s maybe more Cats In Space inspired than classic Sweet, but Full Circle is great fun nonetheless
26. Drifting Sun : Veil --- Neo prog outfit spread their wings into other progressive realms
27. Ian Hunter : Defiance Part 2 --- Part 1 was my album of 2023, and Part 2 comes pretty close to matching it. A real renaissance from the veteran frontman
28. Newman : Colour In Sound --- The most underrated man/band in UK melodic rock do it again
29. Dendera : Mask Of Lies --- British Metal outfit continue their excellent, if largely ignored run of first-rate albums
30. Bruce Dickinson : The Mandrake Project --- Excellent, if a little inconsistent, solo return from Maiden’s frontman
31. Flotsam & Jetsam : I Am The Weapon --- US metal mainstays continue their resurgence
32. Black Country Communion : V --- We thought they were gone for good. Thankfully we were wrong. A very strong return from Hughes, Bonamassa & co
33. Category 7 : Category 7 --- Stan Bush fronted ‘super-group’ deliver a mighty metal smash that satisfies on many levels
34. Riot V : Mean Streets --- With a top tier singer on board, the resurgent Riot V have become one of the most reliable US power metal acts out there
35. Saxon : Hell, Fire Damnation --- If I had a complaint about Saxon post 2010, it’s that their albums tend to be a little interchangeable, but when they are as good as HF&D it’s a hardly the biggest problem ever
36. Todd Michael Hall : Off The Rails --- And talking of the singer in Riot V, here he teams up once more with Kurt Vanderhoof (Metal Church) for a second helping of hard hitting but uplifting rock
37. Dream Evil : Metal Gods --- Euro-power metallers return with another slice of riff-fuelled, chanty chorus fun
38. Powerwolf : Wake Up The Wicked --- Love ‘em or loath ‘em, Powerwolf are a power metal juggernaut only set to get bigger and, I guess, sillier
39. The Feeling : San Vito --- It’s hard not to think that these lads squandered their chance to become the biggest grown-up UK pop band with a succession of so-so albums. San Vito finds them heading back in the right direction
40. Deep Purple : =1 --- I don’t seem to have quite connected with this album in the way that most have. However, I won’t deny that it continues a run of excellent releases from a band who have every right to be resting on their laurels right now, but clearly aren’t
41. Demon : Invincible --- 8 years in the making, Demon return with a cracking hard rock/metal album that cements their place as underground UK legends
42. The Catch : The Absence Of Light --- One of the best UK neo-prog act for many a year keep up their high standards with album number 2
43. Patchwork Cacophony : Hourglass --- Third album from multi-instrumentalist (and Gandalf’s Fist keyboard player) Ben Bell confirms his position as a classy songwriter and performer
44. Cyan : The Guardians --- Rob Reed of Magenta continues to reinvigorate his original band by reworking some old music and creating something new along the way. Yet again Peter Jones (vocals and more) is arguably the real star here
45. Myles Kennedy : The Art Of Letting Go --- Maybe not as good as what’s come before from the Alter Bridge frontman, but this is solid stuff nonetheless
46. Paul Morricone : Go Sanction Yourself --- Another fine, eclectic, effervescent set of songs from the Scaramanga Six man
47. Cats in Space : Time Machine --- There are some great songs on this latest platter from the Cats, but as an album it’s maybe their least impactful
48. Triton Project : Messenger’s Quest --- The best underground progressive/power metal album of the year
49. Radioactive : Reset --- Tommy Denander and friends deliver another fine slice of melodic rock that celebrates the days of classic AOR
50. Firewind : Stand United --- Gus G brings the fret fire (and the wind?) as he reignites Firewind once again
